In 1979, under license from ATF, ITC developed four new weights in roman and italic: book, medium, demi and heavy. Morris Fuller Benton designed Franklin Gothic for the American Type Founders Company in 1903-1912. Franklin Gothic URW is a sans-serif typeface designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1902 and released by the American Type Founders in 1908. Originally issued in only one weight, the ATF version of Franklin Gothic was eventually expanded to include five additional weights, but no light or intermediate weights were ever developed.
